This little painting is also part of the Strada Challenge I completed. The day's lesson for me was on brushstrokes. Try as I may, some times the brush has a mind of it's own and you end up with a bunch of painting strokes that look like clones. My goal, try not to repeat myself and make the painting look interesting. Harder than it sounds, for me. This is certainly a good day for this painting! Cold, rainly and sorta gloomy. Besides being tasty, it keeps your hands warm. I've finished the Strada Easel, 31 paintings in 31 days. It was a learning curve and great journey. Really think it helped improve my brushstrokes, you will be the judge of that. These little paintings have each been a little lesson. My plan is to keep painting a little every day. I'm almost a week behind in posting these little paintings. Doing a painting a day is getting a little easier. Trying to find something to paint is becoming less stressful so there is something very positive here. Working everyday makes improvement and I think that applies to our lives also. I had the worse time trying to photograph this painting due to the glare. Doing a painting a day doesn't allow time for dark colors to dry. Not being a great or even a photographer in the first place really presented in issue for me. Note to self, use camera only in day light...when possible. That's all I have for the day. Yes, I've been gone a rather long time...again. A few surgeries starting in May and lasting through November gave me serious set backs but this year we will try making lemonade to compensate. I have started with a lofty challenge of 31 paintings in 31 days. What was I thinking you ask? Don't know, but I'll do my best to continue through the month. Hang in there with me and see just where we go. So sorry my friends, I took time out to have surgery for a ruptured abdominal viscous (colon) with peritontis. 4days in Intensive Care, 4 in Critical Care and 4 days just returning to the human race. At home I had a nurse, Physical therapist and a Occupational therapist. Our house was like Grand Central Station for a while. I no longer need a walker or shower chair or other aids to get back to my life. I have another surgery coming up in a few months to reverse a colonostomy bag that was needed. When you have lemons in your life, make a painting!

What have you been doing? Hopefully nothing so drastic. Leave a note, let me know how you are.
I've heard it said many times..."I hate the gray days in Seattle." My job is to point out how beautiful the colors glow with the grayness around them. Trying different backgrounds in my painting help to emphasis this. I did this little painting of yellow flowers without a background, (yeah, I should have made a photo of it). They were really washed out and no character. After adding the dark they really popped. So, next gray day in your area, look at the colors of trees and other objects in the world, unless you happen to be driving. My husband is a member of the Washington Koi and Water Garden Society. They had a meeting and auction at Sky Nursery which is a beautiful place to visit. This arrangement is similar to another post, one was used to experiment with the palette knife and this one was mainly brush. I find it interesting to make variations in the same subject and try to expand on it. It's like driving home from work, usually you take the same road but on occasion, you make a detour and see something a little different. Was that explanation to far out there? For some reason, I've gotten on the yellow rose kick. There are so many variations of this color to explore and paint that it has become a fascination for me. This happens when you really enjoy playing with color. I have done another painting of the same set up using a palette knife for most of it. I'll show you that one in a few days. It's Sunday and already I have a problem. Four paintings and only posted for the 30 paintings in 30 days. Hummm glad I caught this early, now to figure how to get the one I missed or, add March 3 as my finish date. That sounds much better eh? What do you think?Blanche Niznikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07616130987484959852noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005479124685909841.post-71357810941719282502018-02-03T21:47:00.001-08:002018-02-03T21:47:08.882-08:00The Good Life

Confession...there is another painting under this one, same subject but missing a little sparkle. Enter the palette knife, lots more paint and Voila! new attitude. Also reworked the background. Ok, I'll just try and stick to new work but found this fun to redo. Have any secrets you want to share? January didn't quite start the way I had planned but a few more Physical Therapy sessions and I will be good as new or let's just say, better.
I sprained my meniscus, getting out of a chair. Guess I sat too long in a weird position with my knee bent and stood up at a bad angle. Sixteen years of martial arts and other sports activities and never anything like this. Go figure, right? Thought I could just prop this leg up and paint away. In reality, I sorta stared into space and took naps. Back to painting and a normal schedule feels really good. So, how did you start your year? Of course I want to know, drop a line or two please.Blanche Niznikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07616130987484959852noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005479124685909841.post-8507370767830861062017-11-26T11:44:00.003-08:002017-11-26T11:55:17.866-08:00Lemons & Blue Cup

Lemons seem to be a symbol for refreshing taste as well as a refreshing color. Thought I would post this after all the turkey, potatoes and desserts we have seen on Facebook. The holiday season is in full force so balance your time and energy and, maybe relax and have a cup of tea with lemon.Blanche Niznikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07616130987484959852noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005479124685909841.post-41163519879863972472017-11-14T17:12:00.001-08:002017-11-14T17:12:12.905-08:00Yellow Roses

Not sure where you are right now but here in Lake Forest Park, WA it's rainy, cold and very windy. I had made a promise to try painting flowers in bright colors to off set the day. Now that we are going into a serious winter mode I plan on also using the time for study.

Most of my paintings are landscape, seascape and still life subject matter. My plan is to work on paintings that don't come quite so easy. This includes portraits, figures and buildings. I do believe we get a mind set of what we can and cannot do instead of just practicing what takes more time, thought and energy. I'll keep you posted on how this works out. So, what are you going to do besides cuddling up to the fireplace with a box of bonbons? Of course I want to know...so write!Blanche Niznikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07616130987484959852noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005479124685909841.post-17239722140288689332017-10-28T16:58:00.003-07:002017-10-28T16:58:57.694-07:00Holy Barracuda!

Can it really be I've not posted since July? Sincere apologies to those who have checked this blog to find...nothing new. How rude!
I have painted, taken a couple of workshops. sketched and played with Gouache paint. A little heavier than watercolor but not as messy as oil clean-up. Actually, depending on how it's used you can have the effect of oil or watercolor. Neat eh?

Time now to line up a few paintings for posting, lord knows I have some you haven't seen. Trying new ways to do Still Life paintings. Sometimes you have to just let go and let a new technique take over. Not sure if I went over board on this or not but it kept me busy for quite a while today. I hope your day is as peaceful as I tried conveying in this painting. A few years ago I had a friend living on a farm in Sultan, WA. What an ideal place to paint and just get back to nature. Unfortunately, after one of the big floods, the owners gave up the property. I'm glad I had a chance to visit, paint, take photo's and sketch before this all happened. So, if you see something you think you might want to paint, do it now, the opportunity could pass you by. That was a good lesson for me not that I always follow my own advise. So, what are your words of wisdom for today? One more thing, this painting won the Kenmore Camera award in the PNW Summer Show at Tsuga Gallery in Bothell WA this past Saturday. Yep, I was surprised!Blanche Niznikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07616130987484959852noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005479124685909841.post-34333917034301534762017-06-27T15:59:00.003-07:002017-06-27T15:59:51.088-07:00PathTo The River

I love paths, roads, walkways that lead you to interesting places, they have such character. They are also difficult for me to paint into something you might want to see on one of your journey's. Guess this is another challenge to pursue this year. Ok, I'm going back to the drawing board to see what else I can come up with. I love mixing colors and painting still life set ups. There is something satisfying about putting a few items together for a pleasant look and then, try to pull it off. I think I'm writing this for me. This is Bonnie Marie, Miss Bonnie as he called me or sometimes I was referred to as "you special thing" don't know where that came from. We didn't find out Bonnie was a boy until he had been with us for about three years so the name stuck. He arrived at our house at 10 weeks and was quite a little character. One of his favorite pastimes was pulling clothes partially through the holes in the clothes basket, it took quite a while before I figured out he was also chewing little holes in those items. Another was muttering, "I'm just sure" as he watched the birds outside. There are so many little stories I had better keep them as memories rather than bore you and loose my audience. So, thanks for being here and listening.

He was special and has created a big hole in my heart.
